Fahrenheit 451 Q5

Fahrenheit 451 Q5

- What is the mood of this novel? Do you find this novel saddens you in any way? why?

-> There are lots of moods. But mainly, it is dark. The mood of this novel, "Fahrenheit 451", is extremely hopeless and sorrowful. In Guy Montag's world, the books are illegal. Most of the people in the world act just like robots. Most of the people have fixed thoughts. People in Montag's world just do what the governments say. Actually, people can not avoid government, because the books are illegal to read. If the book was legal, people would read books, and they would get out from the fixed thoughts. That means, book is the best source to make human creatively. But the government in Montag's world did not want people to resist on them. Governments just wanted to rule over the Montag's world. We can see sadness at the beginning of the book. People were not even allowed to read, and that was really sad. People in Montag's world were controlled by the governments just like robots. Also, when Guy Montag realized that burning books were not right things to do, he tried to change the world. But people found books in Montag's house, so Montag's house got burnt. Montag tried to escape from the firemen, but he got injured. And Beatty died, because Beatty chose death. Beatty did not have any courage to change the world. That was the part that I thought it was really hopeless. Montag had hopes to change the world, but he failed. Also Beatty died. The mood was very dark. If it was bright mood, I would have read with fun. I could not read the book with fun. But the book was really moral.

  1. I agree on the fact that mood of the novel is dark. Yes, I had similar thoughts about the book when I was reading it especially the part fact that the people in the novel were indeed like robots in a number of ways. They were oblivious to the knowledge of right and wrong. The part where you said, "People in Montag's world were controlled by the governments just like robots. Also, when Guy Montag realized that burning books were not right things to do, he tried to change the world" because I believe that Montag made a choice to try to do the right thing even though he was unsuccessful in the end.
